Does The Canon EOS M200 Have An External Mic Input?

If you’ve just got your Canon EOS M200 and thought…

Now then, how do I connect my microphone to my Canon EOS M200?

Then you’re in for some bad news…

To be able to use an external mic on your Canon EOS M200, it needs a 3.5mm microphone jack.

Unfortunately, the Canon EOS M200 does not have a 3.5mm microphone jack.

Can You Connect An External Mic To Canon EOS M200

The Canon EOS M200 does not have a 3.5mm microphone jack, so you cannot just plug in and connect an external mic.

Since you can’t just connect a microphone to the EOS M200 you need to be creative if you want to use external audio.

There is a way to use external audio without physically attaching a mic to the EOS M200, which we describe later in the post.

Since the Canon EOS M200 does not have an external mic input, you might want to use an alternative camera that does have a mic input.

Alternative To The Canon EOS M200 That Has A Mic Input

If you like the Canon EOS M200, then the Canon EOS M50 Mark II could be a good alternative for you as the EOS M50 Mark II does have an external microphone input.

The Canon EOS M50 Mark II was released in 2020, 1 Year after the Canon EOS M200 which was released in 2019.

Both are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, but the Canon EOS M50 Mark II comes with some improvements.

Most importantly the M50 Mark II has an external microphone input whereas the M200 does not.

The M50 Mark II also has a fully articulated screen whereas the M200 only has a tilt screen.

Other benefits to the M50 Mark II include the capability to use:

  • 10fps continuous shooting vs 6.1fps on the M200
  • An electronic viewfinder
  • External flash shoe
  • Eye tracking focus
  • NFC Connection
  • AE bracketing

The main downside to the M50 Mark II over the M200 is that the M50 Mark II is slightly heavier, weighing in at 387g compared to the M200 which weighs in at 299g.

What Is The Internal Mic On The Canon EOS M200?

Even though you can’t connect an external mic directly to the EOS M200, you can still record audio using the built-in microphone.

The Canon EOS M200 has a built-in microphone which records stereo sound.

How To Use External Audio With EOS M200 (Without Plugging In Mic)

If you are desperate to use external audio for your Canon EOS M200, there is still a way to get this done without attaching a mic to the EOS M200.

Since you cannot use an external mic attached to the EOS M200, you have to be a bit more creative.

One way to use an external audio device is to just record separately using a microphone that isn’t attached to the EOS M200.

You can then synchronize the audio and video in your post-production process.

Basically, you would:

  • Record your video with your Canon EOS M200.
  • Record audio separately with a microphone.
  • Join the two audio and video tracks together in your editing software.

The video below shows you one way of doing this with a sony a6000, but the same concept applies to the EOS M200.

Conclusion

You should now know that you cannot connect an external microphone to the Canon EOS M200 as it does not have a 3.5mm microphone jack.
