Sometimes when you are using flash in your photography you may need to know the maximum sync speed for your camera.
💡 In general the most common maximum sync speed (x-sync speed) is 1/200 seconds. A fair amount of cameras also have a max sync speed of 1/250 seconds and 1/180 seconds.
Maximum sync speed can also be known as the x-sync.
This is the maximum (fastest) shutter speed at which the camera can synchronise with the flash effectively.
If you were to go above this sync speed then you would introduce black bars into your photo.
You can go above this sync speed using flash if you are using high speed sync (HSS), but that’s a different topic.
This article lists a number of popular Canon and Nikon cameras along with their maximum flash sync speeds.
